We awoke to an overcast sky that continued until we got through Erie, PA when the sun began burning through. The landscape was dotted with vineyards, rows and rows of lush, green vines. We crossed a small section of PA and quickly passed into Ohio for the remainder of the day…Cleveland to Port Clinton along the shores of Lake Erie on Route 2.
Northern Ohio is beautiful. It is wide open, rolling, green hills dotted occasionally with huge farms, vineyards and tree farms. The fog from Lake Erie creeps among the peaks and valleys giving it all a lovely pastoral look. We got a preview of Lake Erie just outside of Cleveland but had to wait for a really good view until we were ready to cross Sandusky Bay to Port. Clinton. Wow!

Following the unloading process, DillyDog and I explored the shore immediately behind the motel. We were right on the edge of Lake Erie! It went on far beyond the horizon…a lake or a sea? The water was kind of a muddy brown and was warm where we tested it, but I’m sure it gets colder as it gets deeper. Eddie found a bench and just kicked back for a bit with Marty.

It didn’t take long for DillyDog and me to go see the town. It was a short walk to a nearby city beach, and DillyDog immediately found something to roll in, so she got a good taste of the lake when I rinsed her off. She was not pleased. We found some geese on the shore as well as a bird walk through some marshes.
Finally, we reached the pier. It was actually a canal for all the boats docked there to have access to the lake, so I’m not sure pier is the right word. We watched the boats come and go and some folks fishing for perch and bass. We decided to go back to get Eddie and Marty so they could see some of the sights, and after a quick meal, we all enjoyed the sunset at the “pier” with a view of the drawbridge over the Portage River.
