The morning began with a trip on the The Lake Champlain Ferry from Burlington to Port Kent, New York. It was a wonderful way to start the day. The sun was out, the air crisp, the company great and the views spectacular. DillyDog has become such a seasoned that she simply enjoyed all the smells on the deck and watched as we sailed away from Vermont toward the New York shore.

Once ashore, we began to wind our way through the Adirondacks. We stopped at the incredible Ausable Chasm, passed White Face Mt., saw an awesome spillway in Wilmington, and drove through the heart of Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics. I was so busy looking at the town, I forgot to take a picture of the lake! I did, however get Saranac Lake if that makes a difference.

Rolling down highway 3 it got warmer and the foliage on the sides of the road became less dense and a paler green. We passed through Lake Tupper which was very busy and then twisted and turned our way on Olympic Trail out of the Adirondacks to Watertown.

I grabbed a moving shot of the Oswegatchie River as we went by just because I love the name and the Black River just outside of…you guessed it, Black River! The town also has an awesome spillway that I caught in passing. The river continues through Watertown in a series of falls and spillways.

It was a much shorter day and we arrived in Watertown with enough energy left for DillyDog, Marty and I to walk around a bit. What an interesting city. The hometown of Woolworth of 5 & Dime fame, the safety pin and hydro-electric power. The first women’s suffrage march was held in 1914…so a very progressive city.

We discovered the town river walk right away. The Black River cascaded crazily over the rocks and a small spillway. We watched it until the mosquitoes found us.

We returned to the town square and discovered that the land was dedicated to the town in 1805 for public use. There were pictures from various eras showing the square hardly changing while the buildings around it changed names and/or storefronts and signage. There was a wonderful library guarded by stone lions and a museum that had vintage cars hidden in a garage in the back…actually, I don’t think we were supposed to be out there, but…

We ended our day with good old KFC while planning the following route to Niagara Falls, woo hoo!
